Last year's summary:
Hopefully, everyone has had their beauty sleep from Friday night. Another big thankyou to everyone who assisted in anyway whatsoever on Friday and Saturday at the U Mater walk.
We don’t do the event for the money – it is solely a community service to support families and friends impacted by suicide, by providing our facilities and a place for food and drink.
The walk started 4 years ago with 15 people, it grew to 50 then 150 last year – this year they estimated 650 - 700 at the start (they were trying to count) with upto 1000 there overnight and in the morning.
RCEM was verbally acknowledged in speeches by the organisers, Mayor Penfold, Dan Repacholi MP, Meryl Swanson MP, and they came over to say hello and thanks. Councillor Bill Hackney also came over and said hello.
Most importantly, the walkers absolutely loved us being there for them, and we are certainly now trusted by Nathan from EZ Power, after working with him for 2 years. I have put it to Liz for a vocational visit to his huge complex at Rutherford, and she will check her schedule.
Sales were nothing great – we sold $510 of their sausages and drinks and $1126 of our Bacon and eggs and drinks – as I said, we were never there to make a fortune. From the event we seem to have inherited a large amount of drinks – EZ donated these, and may ask for them back; I will touch base with Nathan on them.
The event has also got some talk going between the walking groups to do some combined walks during the year, for a cause, it was also brought up the Lift the Lid Walk should combine with this walk – something for the organisers of that to contemplate, as both causes go hand in hand.
Thanks again – we now prepare for the athletics carnival and Clean Up Australia – with a break from catering until the end of March.
Regards
BC
